The shallowness of the upper basin is intended to bring the wet work surface (sink bottoms are normally 8-10 inches below countertop) up to a more comfortable height, minimizing back strain and maximizing ease-of-use. The height also allows convenient storage of accessories underneath. The lower basin is large enough to soak even a large roasting pan or plenty of dirty dishes.
