In Pratt’s graduate ID program, students generate a lot of dust; sanding, grinding or otherwise working materials such as plaster, foam, MDF and joint compound. In addition, many students also use aerosol cans for the application of finishes and adhesives.

In theory, students are supposed to do this kind of work where there is adequate dust-collection or ventilation, but because access to such facilities was limited to certain hours, much of the dusty work was done in the shared studio, the hallway or classrooms adjacent to the studios.
